I may have recently moved to Rock Hall, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, but I've traveled all over this October to photograph old- and new-to-me families of Central MD for their Fall family pictures. My photography, of course, has taken me all throughout nearby Chestertown and Kent County. I've also visited Centreville, Easton, Annapolis, and for this sweet family pictured here, Columbia.
This is the time of year when families want to take advantage of the Autumn leaves and have started to think about family pictures for holiday cards and gift giving during the Christmas and holiday season. For this session you see here, there weren't many changing leaves yet, but we had beautiful weather and oodles of gorgeous, natural light.
As you will see here, during my sessions, I like to dedicate about a quarter of our shoot time to loosely-posed family portraits. Usually at the beginning of the session, I will tell you where to sit or stand for me, and then I will take your family's portrait. Afterwards, your family gets to do something fun and/or relaxing for the rest of the session that doesn't require you to sit still and smile prettily and self-consciously for the camera.
During our pre-session consultations, in addition to wardrobe guidance and help with picking your shoot location, we will discuss what your family likes to do together and plan an activity for you to do during your shoot. By doing something your family enjoys doing together, your session is more fun and relaxed, and I'm able to get authentic photos of you with genuine interactions and real moments. Your photographs tell the story of who you are as a family in this moment in time.
I love observing parents be parents. The nurturing, the cooing and singing, the giggles, and the snuggles. All of it warms my heart. Having a tough day? Go photograph a family being a family. It'll brighten any day.
I also love watching personalities emerge during a photo session. This little guy likes to grab everything in sight (particularly his mama's hair), have the ABCs song to him, and he's very curious. He was very mellow and laid-back during our shoot, and was perfectly happy spending the afternoon in the park. When he's sleepy, he plays with his ear. He's very active, likes to crawl everywhere, and he's currently practicing his standing skills. He already has eight teeth and, based on the gnawing he did during our session, I think he'll have more arriving soon.
